Absences electronic interventions in nature

For the past few days, I've been thinking over and over about an electronic device that could hibernate. One thing that strikes me here is the very fast pace at which weather and illumination change throughout the year. At this time of the year, daylength is about 14 hours. It will drop by 5 minutes every day until it reaches about only 5 hours by mid-december...

Friday morning 8:15 am, I landed on the tip of the world. More than 15 hours after leaving Montreal, the turboprop plane from Air North which provided the connection from Whitehorse, landed softly on the gravel runway of Dawson City's national airport.

I met Lance and Tammy at the airport. Tammy is an artist in residence who will share Macaulay House with me until the end of September. Like me, she departed from Montreal, but we have taken different flights to Whitehorse.

Long time I haven't written anything on that blog. Since I came back from Quebec City to my place in Morin-Heights, I've been forced to work on everything that I had left on the side during the residency. This was a harsh Summer, rainy, cold and dark. And the animals, especially the frogs, have been pretty quiet.

As part of my electronic intervention project "Absences", I am happy to invite you to a public presentation of the results of my residency at Avatar (Québec City). This Third Absence consists in a group of autonomous modules that interact with the inhabitants of a marsh, batrachians and birds.

La semaine a filé en un éclair et je n'ai eu aucun temps pour écrire dans ce journal de bord. Nous sommes vendredi soir, il est 1h30 du matin à Québec et c'est la canicule. Je ne suis pas près d'aller me coucher: le projet commence sérieusement à prendre forme et je suis en feu!

État des lieux.

Frogs are gone. The courtship period is already over for these invisible aquatic creatures. They're always there, somewhere, probably making tadpoles or daydreaming. In silence.

Suite au billet de blogue d'hier, quelques commentaires au sujet des haut-parleurs. Passons pour le moment la question de la résolution sonore (nombre de bits). Pour ce projet, nous nous satisfaisons bien d'un son à 8 bit, ce qui est suffisant pour reconnaître des grenouilles et des camions.

Première question: comment choisir un haut-parleur? Il y a quelques éléments importants à considérer:

Ça fait un bout de temps que je voulais faire le point sur la question du son. En travaillant sur ce projet de résidence à Avatar, j'apprends beaucoup de trucs sur tout ce qui entoure l'audio.

Une des choses qui m'étonne vraiment c'est que j'ai compris qu'en s'y prenant bien, on peut arriver à une bonne qualité sonore même avec des composantes de faible coût et qui roulent avec peu d'énergie. Il suffit de connaître quelques trucs de base.

Mardi soir, je suis allé sur le site afin de vérifier si j'arrivais à enregistrer les sons du milieu à l'aide de mon enregistreur maison. Je suis d'abord allé avec Myriam qui a pris quelques photos, mais nous sommes allés trop tôt et les reinettes ne s'étaient pas encore éveillées. Je suis retourné plus tard.
