From the world's tip

Dawson City valve chamber building

Friday morning 8:15 am, I landed on the tip of the world. More than 15 hours after leaving Montreal, the turboprop plane from Air North which provided the connection from Whitehorse, landed softly on the gravel runway of Dawson City's national airport.

I met Lance and Tammy at the airport. Tammy is an artist in residence who will share Macaulay House with me until the end of September. Like me, she departed from Montreal, but we have taken different flights to Whitehorse.

On the road, Lance (director of the residency program) talks a little about the place. Dawson City is a small town with about 1300 inhabitants, living mainly from tourism and gold mining. The seasons are very marked. In summer, there are many tourists and the city becomes much more active. In winter it gets very cold and dark, but the "locals" stay around. The region has a rich history, Dawson City being one of the nevralgic points of the Gold Rush. The surrounding landscape has been marked: the titanic machines of the Yukon Gold Mining Co. and others have created a network of serpentine hills, the "dredge tailings".

Looking at the buildings, it seems as if nothing has changed since then. It's like living in a film by Sergio Leone ... Yet this is not Disney World, almost everything here is genuine, these are ancient houses.

Our place of residence is also very old. It was owned by the first mayor of Dawson City. I live there with Tammy and a few ghosts (the house is supposedly haunted). We each have one bedroom and a studio, as well as all the essentials to live in the North: winter coats, rubber boots, sun lamp, mosquito cream and anti-bear spray (!)

Attached images of this strange city that still leaves me confused.
